Experimentation...

Yesterday I was really left flustered and annoyed, when I shared a new song with someone who is supposed to be a guidance figure in my career, only to be left feeling belittled because it "wasnt on the right track", or that I'm "not staying focused" .....

As an artist, why should I not be allowed to create any way I want to , if I feel it is going to inspire me and help me see my songs in a new light. If I want to add a certain beat to one song, if it is going to inspire me to finish a song I havent touched in a few years, then why the eff not? I think any form of song arrangement , or experimentation IS "focus"... as long as I am working on my music, it should be considered focus. Well that is my little rant for the day ... it has been heavy on my mind since yesterday afternoon , and a quote that I just found while reading my monthly subscription to Glamour Magazine.... it made me go , AHA! Now here is someone who knows what theyre talking about .... Thank you Tori Amos....

"In life, sometimes everything falls into place, and sometimes everything just falls to pieces. The key is to begin creating with these fallen pieces. By improvising, you'll create something magical that might be the best thing you've ever accomplished."

Ok here is the new song

"Another Way"

Another Way
He loves me
He loves me not
and now these broken petals
are all I got

He moves me
I never stay in one spot
and for him
I have been
All that I am not

He pushes me away
He pushes me away
He pushes me away
and he always finds a way

Another way to make me fall apart
Another way to make me cry
Another way to keep me in the dark
Another way to make me see the light

He loves me
He loves me not
And now broken promises
are all I got

Emotions
They never stay in one spot
They're up and down
Just like a broken clock

It's ticking me away
It's ticking me away
It pushes me away
and he always find a way

Another way to make me fall apart
Another way to make me cry
Another way to keep me in the dark
Another way to make me see the light

I can only stand this for so long
I sat here counting petals
and now theyre all gone
I wish this wind would just die down
theyre scattered to the breeze now
maybe it's better this way....
Cuz he just keeps finding ways

  1. As long as your music is true to what you feel, and need to express at the time, it IS valid! No matter what anyone else thinks. Perhaps that person was thinking more from a career point of view thinking about "your sound" or some industry style expection of what you "should" sound like. Artists always run into friction when they try to do something different. But then most every successful artist out there, reinvents themselves constantly. Maybe it's a song that wouldnt "make it to the album" because it doesn't fit some stuffy formula of the specific genre the album will be stereotyped as, so they know where to stick it in the record store, or what lineup to play it in on the radio. Screw it, it's your song. keep it.. compromise and write something "they" want later, but keep writting what you need to as well.
"All you need is three chords, and the truth".. ok maybe throw a couple more chords in there too if you need too ;-) Be honest with yourself, and you listeners, and your music will mean something to someone. Can't please everyone ( which includes who you plays that song for ), but, you might reach "someone". And thats really ALL that matters..

I'd LOVE to hear that song btw..

  2. Losing focus is a much overused term by people that usually do not have a clue. I'm assuming in your case a "business" person. Everyone's not going to like everything you do - unless they are the classic "yes" people. Please yourself first. I'm not saying never take any advice or criticism, but if you like something and feel strongly about it, stick with it. If deep down inside you feel the same way about someone's comments, then maybe you should change it. But try to retain enough creative control where you get to make the final decision. Good luck.
